Description:
Learn to join metal to metal using a butane micro-torch and solder in thishands-on class. We will cover several different types of soldering approaches, safety issues, supplies needed to set up a torching station, and how to prep and finish your metal. Serious about Sawing

Description:
While it looks simple, using a jeweler’s saw requires practice to master, but there are incredible things that can be done using this handy tool. This class will focus on using the saw to create some filigree layers that will then
be riveted or soldered to a contrasting metal. Great class for beginners or intermediate students, although some metalsmithing experience will be helpful. Students need to bring a dozen 2/0 sawblades.

A Tisket, A Tasket, A Little Copper Basket

Description:
This class for beginner or intermediate students will focus on creating small funnel shaped containers into little baskets with swing handles that can then become pendants or earrings. They can be filled with bead and fiber embellishments or remain more simple in style. The class will cover annealing, forging, texturing, forming, drawing beads on wire, and different ways to attach moving handles to basket style structures.

This class for beginning or intermediate students will focus on multiple techniques used for creating bangle bracelets – open and with clasps. Learn to create several different types of bracelet closures and embellishments. Some soldering will be used as well as cold connection joins. Go home with several new additions to your jewelry collection and lots of new techniques in your metalsmithing toolbox. All tools and supplies provided.

Description:
This class will focus on creating wire and sheet metal cages that can encase beads, irregular stones, or found objects. These can be used for pendant or earring components. There are two types of cages that will be taught, one involving more advanced techniques and one more basic, so the class is ideal for both beginning and more experienced students. All tools and supplies are provided, except students are asked to bring small objects or beads to enclose in cages or you may shop the store to find something that speaks to you. (Items should be no more than 1” in length or diameter for a pendant and 1/2” for earrings.) The more basic style cage works best with a drilled bead or stone.

This class for beginner or intermediate students will teach the process for using muriatic acid and a resist to create intricate designs on sheet metal and copper tubing. Mixed Metal Soldered Cuff

Description:
This class for beginner or intermediate students will focus on soldering pieces of copper, brass, and sterling to a copper base to create a narrow tabbed cuff bracelet. Learn to texture with a faux rolling mill, sweat solder (or get lots of practice if you already know how to solder), create a tabbed clasp, form the cuff, and learn techniques for finishing your bracelet. This is a great way to use up scraps of sterling and other metals. (bring any you may have that you’d like to incorporate – wire or sheet) All tools and supplies will be provided, including a 1” x 2” strip of sterling sheet, 1” x 2” piece of brass, and an 8” x 1/2” strip of copper. Be sure to bring extra magnification if you need it for soldering.

Finally we’ll put all our components together with simple wirework and leather accents to make a fabulous fall necklace.

Students will learn palette set-up (the key to producing a successful painting) and canvas preparation followed by a discussion on color theory with a demonstration on mixing colors. Description: The jeweler’s saw is both a blessing and a curse to those interested in creating
jewelry components out of sheet metal, wire, and tubing. It allows the artist to create intricate designs as well as to make very precise and clean cuts. However, it takes a good bit of practice and there are some techniques that help with both precision and practical use. This class will challenge the beginning or intermediate student to use the saw on sheet, wire, and tubing and to develop skills while creating a piece or two of jewelry. All supplies and tools will be provided, but those with a jeweler’s saw and bench pin should bring them to lessen the wait for shared tools. (Size 3/0 or 2/0 blades are recommended for this class if you are purchasing a saw or blades) Bring reading glasses if needed for close work as well as a work.

Crystal Star Earrings

You provide: Size 11 or 15 seed beads (you can buy at shop to match your choice of crystal color), ear wires, beading needles size 12.
Description: A Beginner level bead weaving class; the learned technique of making this pretty piece can also be used to make bracelets or a pendant.

Basic Bead Class

You will make earring and a bracelet, everything included. All supplies included to make a bracelet with a clasp and a pair of earrings. Silver plated findings are used; you can purchase sterling findings if desired.

Fold-Forming on metal with Deb Guess
When: THIS CLASS HAS TAKEN PLACE. PREVIOUS CLASS.
Fee: $85 (includes all supplies and use of tools)
Description: Learn to use hammers, torches, textures, and folds to design fold formed jewelry. Learn to design a brooch and stick pin as well as a cuff bracelet and a pendant or pair of earrings during this day-long class. Use of tools and all supplies are covered in the cost. Participants should bring a small notebook, magnifying glasses (if needed) and work apron.

All supplies and tools will be provided by the instructor except the following which participants need to bring: old apron or work shirt, rubber gloves, dust mask, and small notebook and pen.

Woven Leather Bracelet

Description:
You will learn to make a woven leather bracelet as pictured above. You will need size 6/0 beads-2 colors.

Bezel or Bust with Deb Guess
When: THIS CLASS HAS TAKEN PLACE. PREVIOUS CLASS.
Fee: $85
Description: This class will teach participants how to create bezels in which to capture stones, found objects, cabochons, and more. All tools and supplies are included, including fine silver bezel wire and sterling sheet. Participants are welcome to bring a small flat stone or object for “possible” bezeling, but one will be provided in the class kit. Skills covered include soldering, sawing, filing, finishing, and more. Participants should be able to complete a pendant project.

Acid Etching on metal with Deb Guess
When:: THIS CLASS HAS TAKEN PLACE. PREVIOUS CLASS.
Fee: $80 (includes $8 kit fee, all supplies, and use of tools)
Description: Etching is all about “serendipity.” Learn to use muriatic acid to etch the surface of metal sheet that can then be used to create beautiful and unique jewelry. We will apply designs to the surface of the metal, mix the acid etchant, and then etch and clean the metal. Learn to mix, neutralize, and dispose of the etchant solution. Metals that are etched can be used in the afternoon to design an earring or pendant project.

Twisted, Chunky, Soldered Loop Bracelet with Deb Guess
When:: THIS CLASS HAS TAKEN PLACE. PREVIOUS CLASS.
Fee: $46 (includes kit fee, all supplies, and use of tools)
Description: Using several different varieties and gauges of wire, we will learn a short-cut method for creating beautifully twisted links. We will then use chunks of solder and a micro-torch to create bold hammered connections. Learn to make your own clasp and to wire-wrap beaded dangles for embellishing.

The Mystery of Numbers & Letters: Basic Jewelry Metalsmithing with Deb Guess
When:: THIS CLASS HAS TAKEN PLACE. PREVIOUS CLASS.
Fee: $80 (Includes all supplies and use of tools)
Description
: Small metal numbers or letters will be the focal point of a design for a pendant piece that integrates and highlights that number or letter. Other hidden meanings can be built into the piece based on the number of links, dangles, rivets, or other purposeful design elements. This is a great class for learning basic metalsmithing skills or for taking intermediate skills to the next level.

Playing with Fire: Using the Torch to Solder
When:: THIS CLASS HAS TAKEN PLACE. PREVIOUS CLASS.
Fee: $48 (includes all supplies and use of tools)
Description: Learn to use a micro-torch, flux, and solder to attach metal to metal and create a pendant or a pair of earrings. Techniques taught will include cutting and filing metals, use of solder, flux, and a micro torch, as well as cleaning and finishing soldered pieces. All tools and supplies will be provided, but it is recommended that participants bring an apron and a small notebook and pen.

Call Beads & Brushstrokes at 884-8808 at least one week ahead with (2) date choices and class selection for at least (3) students. Your class instructor will call to set the date and receive your 50% deposit, refundable with 24 hour notice of cancellation if you have to.

Classes are subject to instructor and class room availability.
Class pieces are on display in the shop for a better look.
The day of the class students receive 10% off of any purchase.
